Wicklow Retreat in Ireland- This is a very badly run retreat and is seriously lacking genuine and authentic heart based facilitators.

Description

Inner Evolution, Inner Mastery, Ayahuasca International or whatever new name they are disguised as....beware. If you are looking for a genuine and authentic spiritual retreat based around sacred plant medicine, with heart-based experienced facilitators, then this is not the retreat for you. Inaccurate dosage, misleading information, a control-based environment, toxic masculinity, terrible food, ego-based management and money/sales are the predominant drive for this retreat. You would be doing yourself a disservice going to this retreat. It is overpriced and driven by greed. Look elsewhere.

Participants in ceremony: 3

Facilitators in ceremony: 2

Participants per Facilitator: 1.5

Location

Wicklow in Ireland. Great location and is serviced by local transport.

Accommodation

It's a nice house with basic amenities but you know you are in a house run by people who have no interest in keeping it pristine and clean. No hand soap in the main toilet when you arrive and hand towels and dishcloths are filthy. A house that needs a woman's touch for sure.

Facilitators

This is the main problem. One manager/facilitator and an extremely inadequate French facilitator spent more time attending to his own drug habit and personal issues than being present in the ceremony. The manager/facilitator (who most likely comes from a sales background)had the flu so he was not in his best form. Given the current climate with covid, it was inappropriate to run the retreat while sick. This is why the inadequate and inexperienced French facilitator took leadership of the retreat. Another retreat member picked up the flu while there and I myself ended up with a sore throat. The manager has some control issues and this was so apparent before the ceremony even started. He is not a bad guy but he is most certainly not someone I would pay to lead a ceremony with. I basically paid them 230 euros for an extremely small dose of plant medicine and a very disinterested leader and facilitator to play some tunes on a system. The best part of the ceremony was meeting the two lovely ladies who attended. Thankfully I have a lot of experience at past ceremonies to be able to help them out as they were new to the experience, bewildered and struggling. They were there for two days before me and basically left to their own devices in their own turmoil without any real empathy or interest from the guys running it.

Medicine

The first small shot glass was lovely and was a nice indicator of what was to come, but the second dose was barely a teaspoon and inadequate as was the third dose another teaspoon. If I was given two decent shot glasses as opposed to two bare teaspoons/spits then it would have been a lovely experience and decent medicine.

Honesty

I spoke with the manager before I booked the retreat stating I needed to know what their dosage was as I had read so many bad reviews. He assured me they give 2-3 glasses but he lied. They give one small glass and one teaspoon as a booster. I asked for the third dose and received another spoon. It's a joke and a scam if you have experienced other ceremonies run by genuine heart-based leaders.

Secure

I felt safe and secure. If I arrived and there were no female participants, then I would not have stayed. It was a male dominant environment.

Preparation

The kitchen was dirty but the ceremony space was comfortable. The ceremony was barely 3 hours.

Booking process

Follow up integration

This was probably the best part as it was when I felt the facilitators came a bit more to life and it was lovely to hear the participant's experiences. Although I knew what the participants felt about the place and about the facilitators (we had spoken privately) as they did not share their whole true experience with them, just the plant medicine experience.

Disturbing reports associated with Ayahuasca International

Alberto José Varela and Ayahuasca International

Ayahuasca International (originally Ayahuasca Internacional) is also known as Inner Mastery International S.L.U.

Important: Always look for motivations and many recommendations prior to choosing who to drink with!

For reports and resources concerning activities from disrespectful to unethical to downright horrible, see the following links:

  • Official ICEERS statement: Cofán speaking out against Varela’s activities and they say he has had absolutely NO training through them, nor any of his facilitators with Ayahuasca International; that he forged documents and has lied about many associations, such as having any sort of blessing from this indigenous group of true Colombian shamans or their peoples.
  • Sexual abuse testimony, and reported unorthodox practices with his small daughter around often; Cofán speaking out about his illegitmacy, as he claims to have been blessed and trained by these people; Varela’s own psychologist, who sounded a bit unorthodox himself, reportedly pushing for sexual exploration as well, is said to no longer be by Varela’s side due to Varela’s lack of ethics.
  • Very interesting article detailing many astounding and unsafe practices of Varela, such as offering the tea to everyone without any sort of screening or preparation, has highly advertised an illegal practice for monetary gain, including discounts for children; it is questioned where he sources his brew and whether it is in fact ayahuasca; certainly Varela’s commercial efforts are terrible for sustainability of these sacred medicines.
